The sun shading industry in the Netherlands faces challenges with the introduction of the new building decree for living environment constructions that has been in effect since January 2024. This building decree, focused on energy efficiency and sustainability, has a significant impact on all new constructions. According to the BENG requirements, all new buildings must be equipped with sun shading. What does this mean for our industry? What are the challenges? Read more below.

Energy Performance

The new building standards emphasize energy-efficient buildings. New constructions, both residential and commercial, must meet strict energy requirements (BENG 1 and BENG 2) and generate their own energy (BENG 3). Additionally, there is the TOjuli standard to prevent overheating.

Sun shading is crucial to reduce overheating in new constructions. Large glass surfaces can lead to unwanted heat, traditionally combated with energy-intensive methods such as air conditioning. This contradicts the BENG guidelines. As a result, the interest of building owners/managers is shifting towards sun shading products that contribute to a better energy performance of buildings. Our market must therefore adapt to the demand for products that meet these standards. From BREL, our Solar products and BREL SMART BUILDING offer good solutions for this.

Technology Integration

Innovative technologies, such as increasingly efficient and technically smarter battery motors, are becoming more important in the sun shading industry. With these, you can operate sun shades, screens, and shutters in an efficient and automated manner, which fits the need for smart and energy-efficient solutions. With BREL SMART BUILDING, we take it a step further and can integrally operate the sun shading of a larger building.

Sustainability and Environmental Friendliness

The focus on sustainability requires that sun shading products are manufactured with environmentally friendly materials and methods. Manufacturers and dealers must focus on offering products that meet these sustainability standards, which can lead to new collaborations and supplier selections.

Certification and Regulation

Stricter building standards lead to a greater need for certification and compliance with regulations. This means that we, and you as manufacturers and dealers, must ensure that our products and services meet the required standards and regulations to maintain competitive advantage and gain customer trust.

In short, the new building standards challenge the sun shading industry to innovate and adapt to the changing requirements in terms of energy efficiency, technology, sustainability, and regulation. If we successfully tackle these challenges together, we will be able to achieve great results. Will you join us?
