Half of Dutch homes insufficiently prepared for summer heat

Karwei conducted a survey among over 1,000 Dutch people to investigate how they deal with heat and insect nuisances at home. It turns out that nearly half of the homes do not have outdoor sun protection. This is felt indoors: six out of ten Dutch people find their bedroom too warm during hot summer days. As a result, half of them sleep worse and feel more tired the next day.

Those who open windows in the evening to cool down the bedroom often face a second problem. Six out of ten Dutch people have kept a window or door closed because of insects, while they actually needed fresh air.

Pulling out all the stops for a cool house

Dutch people try to keep the heat out in various ways. Nearly eight out of ten close curtains or other indoor sun protection during the day and keep windows and doors shut. Over half turn on a fan and a third use an air conditioner.

Outdoor sun protection, such as awnings, screens, or shutters, is used less frequently. Yet, these block the sun before the heat enters the house through the glass. Combined with screens, the house can be better protected from the sun during the day and ventilated in the evening without mosquitoes and other insects flying in.

Price, choice stress, and installation

For a third of the respondents, the price is a barrier to purchasing additional sun protection or screens. Some also do not know which solution suits their home or how to measure and install it. Others do not want or are not allowed to drill into a window frame, facade, or wall, for example, because they live in a rental property.
